Real/Unreal
2025
3D Rendered Audiovisual Art Installation

EN

Technology/Components: 3D rendering gra- phics engine (Unreal Engine architecture), full-spectrum artificial plant growth lighting systems, organic forest matter bed, and high-resolution digital display interface.

"Real/Unreal" is an audiovisual installation that explores the intersection between the physical and the virtual, the orga- nic and the digital. It pairs a hyperrealistic video generated with Unreal Engine software, which immerses the viewer in a digital forest, with a raw physical component that varies by iteration. For the CCCC version, the piece incorporates a planter box with pine saplings, symbolizing natural life. For the LABoral iteration, it utilizes a bed of genuine burnt forest soil collected from the August 2025 wildfires in the parish of Genestoso (Cangas del Narcea). Illuminated to encourage the growth of the saplings, the planter box serves as a symbol of life and resilience within Mediterranean ecosystems, while the charred soil conversely represents a stark monument to ecological memory. Simultaneously, the audiovisual component transports us into a virtual woodland where a moving scanner line exposes the underlying 3D meshes, revealing the digital creative process behind the artwork.

This tension between the actual and the simulated invites us to reflect on our deep-rooted connection to nature, as well as technology's capacity to both connect and disconnect us from our natural surroundings, ultimately envisioning a future where both worlds can coexist.
